Back in 2017, Hurricane Irma delivered mass destruction to parts of the Caribbean, with the British Virgin Islands seeing a lot of damage themselves. Unfortunately, the popular Bitter End Yacht Club was unable to reopen right away due to the extensive damage to the resort facilities. However, there is some exciting news as the resort is not only set to reopen this coming winter, but it has added overwater bungalows to its room list.
As of right now, there are only a few airlines that venture out to French Polynesia, and you’ll find that getting there isn’t quite as easy as you might think. Another thing you’ll want to understand is that the airlines that travel to French Polynesia all fly into Tahiti first, before departing to the other nearby islands. Thankfully so, Moorea is practically in the shadow of Tahiti so you actually have a few transportation options, unlike most of the rest in this large island group, where a flight is the only practical way of getting there.
With great excitement, El Dorado Maroma, a resort located in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, announced that the construction of 30 overwater bungalows is currently taking place with an opening date of September 1st, 2016.
These water villas will join 128 on-land accommodation options as well as the existing restaurants, bars and resort activities. Once open, these will be the first overwater bungalows in the Cancun area, unless you include the Rosewood Mayakoba Resort just north of Playa del Carmen.
Newly opened, the Soneva Jani Residences Resort is designed to impress over and over again with rather large ‘rooms’ that are more homes than anything else. All in all, guests will find 24 unique overwater suites to choose from, each styled and designed differently from the next.
Guests will also find a plethora of dining options, adventure activities both within the resort and close by as well as a few great resort features that allow you to wind down after a day of fun.
This week we are featuring a unique “couples resort” located on its own private island just off the coast of Belize. St. George’s Caye Resort has 6 over-the-water-cabanas, as they call them, which share a semi-circle pier out over the Caribbean sea. There are six other rooms located on the island itself and that’s it, and if you have a group of the right size you can rent the entire island out yourself.

At the moment, the rooms are available for booking, though guests won’t be able to stay in one until mid May. this year, the PlanHotel group quietly added water villas to their two Maldives resorts, which were also both celebrating their 20th anniversary. What makes these water villas unusual is their unique sense of style that is unlike anything else in the Maldives.
The 25 water villas at each resort were designed by Italian Architect Mr. Ettore Mocchetti, and even a quick look shows that the extensive use of white both inside and out gives the villas a 5-star look that contrasts with the thatched-roof hut designs found at most other Maldives overwater bungalow resorts.
