After a successful opening of their overwater bungalows at their Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort in Montego Bay, Sandals Resort International is ready to do it again with the re-branding of their Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa into the Sandals South Coast. This resort will be the company's second  overwater bungalow resort in Jamaica.

The current beachfront property spans 50 acres within a nature preserve and offers guests land rooms to enjoy as well as a rather long list of amenities and features. Along with the addition of 12 overwater bungalows, the resort's amenities will also undergo a renovation, making for larger resort with more modern features. Its land rooms have also recently been renovated and now include upgraded room categories. At this moment, a completion date has not been set, but we'll keep you up to date as more information becomes available.

Update

You can now reserve one of the overwater bungalows for bookings in November 2017 and beyond. Rates start at US$2,159 per night.

Plans for the 12 overwater bungalows are vague at the moment, but the resort did say that they will have the rooms connected via a heart shaped pier, which adds more character to the project.

Alongside the new bungalows, the resort will be adding a new bar named Latitudes that will be situated over the water as well. Here guests will have the opportunity to enjoy their freshly made drinks in hammocks that have been suspended over the sea. In addition, another bar choice will be added. This one will be called Bar-Tender and will uniquely serve guests drinks as they wade up to the bar while still in the ocean itself.

But there’s even more. If you’re visiting as a couple who is planning on getting married, you’ll find that you have the option of having your dream wedding in an over the water wedding chapel that offers panoramic water views alongside a beautiful glass floor aisle. Couples will also have the option of arriving to the chapel on a private boat, making it even more romantic.

You’ll also find a wide variety of activities to enjoy including the ever famous scuba diving and snorkeling, beach volleyball, table tennis, lawn chess, basketball and more. If you love to workout and don’t want to miss any sessions, you won’t have to as all guests have free use of the resort’s gym. You’ll also find a lovely spa on-site offering a beauty salon, a yoga and pilates studio, a steam room and a few luxurious plunge pools to enjoy. The resort also features three different pools to swim your afternoon away in, one of which is considered to be Jamaica’s largest resort pool.

Those who love to stay up a bit later at night will also find plenty to do as the resort often plays hosts to nightly entertainment including Talent night, Caribbean night, White night and offers lives bands and shows to enjoy alongside your chilled drinks.

  1. There are 4 of us that would like to depart Seattle and get to Sunshine in January. We were thinking Bora Bora but are wide open. I was wondering if there are any water bungalows that accommodate 4 people but are still affordable?

    1. Theresa,

Most of the Bora Bora resort hotels allow 3 guests per room, but I’ve only heard about a couple that allow 4, and those are the super expensive ones that go for close to US$2,000 per night.

The option that might work are the so-called Brando overwater bungalows, which are privately run and not part of a resort. A couple of them have two bedrooms and they are actually more reasonably priced. Good luck! -Roger

  2. Hi, there is 5 of us wanting to stay closest to Jacksonville Florida (Mom not doing well). That has the bungalows over the water, but HAS to be clear water? Can you help me? I am a disabled vet, and they wanted to do this for me. Thank you, Lisa🌞

    1. Lisa,

The closest real overwater bungalows to Florida are in Jamaica at two different Sandals resorts, but the water isn’t turquoise like it is in Bora Bora and the Maldives. Unfortunately Florida is pretty much half a world away from the ones with clear water. The closest are probably in Tahiti, but if you go there you might as well go to Moorea, which is right next door. -Roger
