Overwater bungalows are coming to the British Virgin Islands winter 2022

Back in 2017, Hurricane Irma delivered mass destruction to parts of the Caribbean, with the British Virgin Islands seeing a lot of damage themselves. Unfortunately, the popular Bitter End Yacht Club was unable to reopen right away due to the extensive damage to the resort facilities. However, there is some exciting news as the resort is not only set to reopen this coming winter, but it has added overwater bungalows to its room list.

All-inclusive overwater bungalow and water villa resorts and where to find them

There’s good and bad news for those looking for all-inclusive overwater bungalow and water villa resorts, depending on which part of the world you live in. The bad news for many people is that there are no all-inclusive Bora Bora, Moorea, or Tahiti resorts that include all meals and alcohol in the room rate. Everything else is good news because most activities and services are indeed included in the room rate.

However, if you can get to the Maldives, which is home to most of the world’s overwater, all-inclusive, private villa resorts, you’ll have plenty of excellent options that include meals, alcohol, and even premium alcohol in some cases.

Antigua’s first overwater all-inclusive resort is set to open in May 2019

As of now, the Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa is set to open in May of this year, which is extremely exciting as it’ll be the island’s first overwater resort. On top of that, the overwater rooms here are adults-only, making it a charming Caribbean accommodation for honeymooners, romantically inclined couples, or parents just looking for a vacation away from the kids.

This particular resort is located next to (and in) Deep Bay, which allows guests fantastic views of the lovely Caribbean Sea.

Overwater bungalows in Florida: Under construction at Disney Resort

When it comes to overwater bungalows anywhere near the Caribbean, the pattern lately has been to announce them long before they are ready to break ground. That wouldn’t be so bad if not for the fact that years seem to go by and ground is never broken. Getting funding AND government approval for construction at the same time has been a major challenge, but not for the project we recently learned about.

Evidently there had been rumors in 2013 that Disney would be adding up to 20 overwater bungalows to its Disney’s Polynesian Resort complex in Lake Buena Vista (near Orlando) as part of a major 2-year renovation.

Overwater bungalows in Playa del Carmen, near Cancun, Mexico

In the overwater bungalow scene there is no more popular topic than when Caribbean resorts will build the “honeymoon style” units to compete with those in Bora Bora and the Maldives. Though there are several resorts that claim to be in the process of building overwater rooms, currently there are only a select few that have actually succeeded in building them.

When in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, guests will find two overwater resorts nearby with each offering a Caribbean experience with a South Pacific twist.
