Welcome to overwaterbungalows.net – the ultimate guide to every overwater bungalow and water villa resort in the world.
There are around 165 overwater resorts around the world as of early 2017, with more than 8,000 total overwater villas. About two-thirds of them are in the Maldives, but Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti have some of the world’s best and most famous of these resorts, with the Caribbean also adding these luxury rooms.
These past few weeks have seen a huge rush in Maldives water villa bookings for the upcoming high season and peak season months, and as a result room rates are spiking and deals are hard to come by. All of that makes this “flash sale” all the more amazing, and it won’t last long. Right now you can get a 5-star deluxe water villa that is larger than most houses for only US$541, which is 50% off.
There are other Maldives water villas in that price range for these dates, but none of them are anywhere near this large or luxurious. The Zitahli Resorts & Spa Kuda-Funafaru is a solid 5-star private island hotel with only 30 water villas and 20 island villas, so it’s smaller and more exclusive than anything else in this price range as well. Normally we feature promotions on this page for more affordably priced overwater bungalows, but this week the best and most interesting deal we see is a great discount at what many people consider to be the finest overwater resort in Bora Bora. Out of about 10 luxury resorts on the island, those who’ve visited most or all of them routinely say that the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is tops.
Right now you can get one of their enormous overwater bungalows for only US$990 per night for selected dates in November and December. Their normal “discount” price on these suites is US$1,156, and even that is only available occasionally. In other words, if you are interested in seeing how those who don’t have to ask about room rates go on holiday, now is your chance. [read more]
The Maldives continues to be the best place to find deals on overwater hotel rooms, and this week we are pleased to be able to report that one of our favorite 5-star resorts is offering a great deal. The Irufushi Beach and Spa Resort, which until recently was one of the most luxurious properties in the Hilton chain, is booking its huge water villas for only US$454 per night for two people.
The reason this is one of our favorites is that it combines the choices and features of the larger package-holiday resorts in the Maldives with the upscale feel of a proper 5-star property. So you get a wide variety of restaurants and bars from which to choose along with all the water sports and amenities you’d hope for, without the mass-market experience of most larger private island resorts here. Now that it’s April, the low-season Maldives deals are going strong, so this week we are featuring one of our favorite properties that is now listed at the lowest rates of the year. The Hilton Maldives Iru Fushi Resort & Spa is a gorgeous 5-star resort with 80 water villas that are huge and loaded with luxury amenities.
One reason this one is among our favorites is that they seem to have no problem filling these villas for around US$1,000 per night in the high season, yet they aggressively discount in the low season so those with a 3-star or 4-star budget can comfortably afford them. Right now you can book one of these water villas for only US$420 (plus tax and service) per night in June and July. There are cheaper Maldives water villas, but none anywhere near this category. As high season in the Maldives is approaching it’s getting more difficult finding interesting water villa deals to discuss, but we did come across a promotion at one of the most amazing resorts in the world this week. Perhaps partly due to the fact that it recently changed its name and its management, the Gili Lankanfushi Maldives Resort (formerly the Soneva Gili by Six Senses) is offering its Villa Suites at 20% off in the high season, subject to availability, of course.
As you can see in the title, this means the rooms are US$972 per night, which might sound like a lot (it is a lot), but these rooms are larger than most houses, and as close to paradise as we are likely to find. The resort has only 45 water villas and no rooms on the island itself, so this is an exclusive boutique property that is known for being popular with celebrities because of the privacy available. First introduced in the South Pacific only a few decades ago, the overwater bungalow is now one of the hottest trends in the resort world. Honeymoon couples have been staying in these iconic rooms since the beginning, but now they are popular with families and adventure travelers as well.
For many people, the South Pacific island of Bora Bora is the most famous destination for the best overwater bungalows, but it’s actually the Maldives, which is just southwest of India, where most of these huts-on-stilts exist. The Maldives has more than 90 resorts that feature water villas (as they are typically known there), with several new private-island resorts opening every year.
In the South Pacific you will find almost a dozen resorts on Bora Bora, another five on Moorea, and two on Tahiti that have over water villas. There are about 10 additional overwater resorts on other South Pacific islands stretching all the way to Fiji and New Caladonia.
There are also about a dozen overwater bungalow resorts in the Caribbean, mostly off the coast of Central America, with nearly all of them being diving-oriented “eco resorts.” But a few luxury overwater bungalows exist and more are being built on St. Lucia and other islands in the popular areas of the Caribbean, and this website will be the best place to look for information on all of them.
