Water villas closest to Costa Rica
Costa Rica is the most popular tourist country in Central America, with huge stretches of lovely beaches on both its Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Unfortunately, there are no water villas (called ‘overwater bungalows’ in the South Pacific) in Costa Rica, but there are five resorts in the area that are nearby.
It’s also worth pointing out that if you are looking for the kind of thatched-roof huts standing on stilts over a brilliant and clear lagoon, you won’t find anything like that in Central America. Those can only be built on a very certain kind of small volcanic island where the breakwater is well away from the beach, leaving a large and shallow pool that is without waves.
Information on the overwater bungalows that most people dream about can be found near the bottom of this page.
Overwater bungalows closest to Costa Rica
There are five resorts offering overwater bungalows in Central America, and all of them are in the Caribbean side. The most expensive, which is in Belize, is a private island that features a single luxury overwater suite that includes its own servants. The others are much cheaper and more basic, in addition to an all-inclusive resort in Cuba that has overwater rooms in groups of four.
Check our main Caribbean overwater bungalows page for the specifics, but to summarize, you’ll find:
Cayo Espanto – A Private Island: This ultra-luxury resort on its own island just off Ambergris Caye in Belize has one huge overwater bungalow, and it rents for over US$1,000 per night.
Hotel Meliá Cayo Coco – An all-inclusive resort in Cuba that has 68 overwater rooms in 18 structures over its lagoon, plus 182 rooms in its beach hotel.
Coral Lodge: Six overwater bungalows starting at US$240 per night in a unique eco-resort off Panama.
Anthony’s Key Resort: Ten overwater bungalows (that are barely perched over the water’s edge) in an all-inclusive resort partially set on a private island off Honduras.
CoCo View Resort – Honduras: 16 overwater rooms in groups of 2 or 4 in addition to 10 beach rooms at an all-inclusive resort that offers all-inclusive diving packages as well.
Punta Caracol Acqua-Lodge: Nine overwater bungalows in another small eco-resort off Panama, which is totally solar powered, and includes breakfast and dinner with the room rate, starting at US$344 per night.
Where to find luxury water villa resorts elsewhereIf you are like most of us then you’ve seen those amazing photos, like the one on the right here, and dreamed of spending a romantic holiday in one of these rooms. Unfortunately, the only places in the world where these gorgeous things exist are in the South Pacific and in the Maldives, which is just southwest of India.
Just to make things easy, if you are in the Americas then you’ll want to check out the resorts in the South Pacific, and specifically Bora Bora and Moorea. However, if you are in Europe or Asia then the Maldives is much easier to reach, and there is a far wider selection of water villa resorts there as well.
- Overwater bungalow hotels in Bora Bora – The best clearwater lagoons
- Overwater bungalow hotels in Moorea – Five deluxe resorts on stilts
- Overwater bungalow hotels in Tahiti – Two affordable large resorts
- Overwater bungalow hotels in the South Pacific – 9 resorts (this includes Fiji, Samoa, and many smaller islands)
- Water bungalow hotels in the Maldives – Over 75 resorts ranging from 3-stars to 5-star deluxe
Elsewhere in Asia
- Water villas in Asia – There are 3 small resorts in the Philippines, plus several in Malaysia, Indonesia, and two unusual overwater resorts in Thailand
