Costa Rica is without doubt, the most popular tourist country in Central America. This country impresses with huge stretches of lovely beaches on both its Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Unfortunately, for those wondering, there are no water villas (called ‘overwater bungalows' in the South Pacific) to be found in Costa Rica, but there are five resorts that can be found nearby.

It's also a good idea for us to point out that if you're searching for an overwater experience that resembles those in the South Pacific, you won't exactly get that in Central America. That's because the resorts in this region aren't created to look like a thatched roof hut.

Information on the overwater bungalows that most people dream about can be found near the bottom of this page.

Overwater bungalows closest to Costa Rica

There are five resorts offering overwater bungalows in Central America, with every single one of them on the Caribbean side. The most expensive, which can be found in Belize, is actually a private island that houses only one luxury overwater suite that includes its own servants. The others in the area are much cheaper and thus more basic, in addition to an all-inclusive resort in Cuba that has overwater rooms that sit in groups of four.

Check our main Caribbean overwater bungalows page for the specifics, but to summarize, you’ll find:

Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica – An adult only, all inclusive resort that features a mixture of both land and overwater rooms, this resort offers nightly rates that start out at around US$4,500.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian Resort, Saint Lucia – The only overwater resort to be found on the island, this resort offers rooms that impress with a very private outdoor soaking tub, over water hammocks, and glass floor panels.

Cayo Espanto – A private island escape, this ultra-luxury resort that sits on its own island located just off of Ambergris Caye in Belize has one huge overwater bungalow, and it rents for over US$1,500 per night.

Hotel Meliá Cayo Coco – Noted as an all-inclusive resort in Cuba that features 68 overwater rooms that are stationed in 18 structures over its lagoon, you’ll also find 182 rooms in its beach hotel.

Anthony’s Key Resort: Here, at this all-inclusive resort, you’ll find ten overwater bungalows that are not completely over the water, but peached over the waters edge instead.

CoCo View Resort – Honduras: At this all-inclusive diving resort, overwater rooms are in groups of either 2 or 4. There are also 10 beach rooms to select from.

Punta Caracol Acqua-Lodge: Nine overwater bungalows can be found at this small eco-resort off Panama, which is run off of solar powered, and includes breakfast and dinner with a room rate starting at US$265 per night.
