Overwater bungalows in Switzerland: That’s right, Switzerland

Since this site’s main mission is to be a guide to every overwater bungalow and water villa resort in the world, I’ve been quite surprised at some of the places that exist out there. From a somewhat ramshackle resort in Cuba to a beautiful resort on Koh Samui in Thailand that has rooms set over private pools, these things come in more forms than I ever would have guessed.

We are now listing over 125 of these overwater resorts, and today I just added one that is in Europe, Switzerland to be exact. The strange thing about it for me is that this hotel has actually been open since 2002. The reason it took me so long to hear about it is they call their overwater rooms “Pavilions on the Lake.” [read more]

Getting to the Maldives

While it feels like paradise once you arrive in the Maldives, and especially at your overwater bungalow resort, the location is quite remote for pretty much everyone. Spread over a huge area just southwest of India, it’s many thousands of kilometers from Europe, and even quite a long way from the Middle East as well.

Fortunately, there are many flights into Malé International Airport from all over, meaning that most people will only have to change planes once along the way. The other nice thing is that since these are all long-haul flights you’ll be in a proper wide-body plane, so even those in economy class will have a good-sized seat with decent legroom. [read more]

About overwater bungalows and water villas

First introduced in the South Pacific only a few decades ago, the overwater bungalow is now one of the hottest trends in the resort world. Honeymoon couples have been staying in these iconic rooms since the beginning, but now they are popular with families and adventure travelers as well.

For many people, the South Pacific island of Bora Bora is the most famous destination for the best overwater bungalows, but it’s actually the Maldives, which is just southwest of India, where most of these huts-on-stilts exist. The Maldives has more than 80 resorts that feature water villas (as they are typically known there), with several new private-island resorts opening every year.

In the South Pacific you will find almost a dozen resorts on Bora Bora, another five on Moorea, and two on Tahiti that have over water villas. There are about 10 additional overwater resorts on other South Pacific islands stretching all the way to Fiji and New Caladonia.

There are also about a dozen overwater bungalow resorts in the Caribbean, mostly off the coast of Central America, with nearly all of them being diving-oriented “eco resorts.” But a few luxury overwater bungalows exist and more are being built on St. Lucia and other islands in the popular areas of the Caribbean, and this website will be the best place to look for information on all of them.
