Deluxe overwater lagoon suite in Playa del Carmen, Mexico for US$626/night
If you are looking for an overwater bungalow that is easy to reach from North America, then this is the most challenging time of year. I’ve been searching for weeks for any kind of decent deal to write about, but it’s honestly tough to find availability in Bora Bora or Moorea, much less a deal. So for now I thought I’d point out that there is a resort not far from Cancun that has the next best thing, and it’s a stunning 5-star resort with reasonable rates in the coming months.
The Rosewood Mayakoba Resort in Playa del Carmen has Deluxe overwater lagoon suites for US$626 per night in the shoulder season. This is the lowest rate we’ve seen on these huge and luxurious rooms, so it’s one to consider for those in the market. It has the finest overwater bungalows in the Caribbean at the moment, and it’s the easiest to reach as well.
A Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite at the Rosewood Mayakoba Resort in Playa del Carmen for US$626 per night for two people, including breakfast daily.
This rate is available on hotels.com, our booking partner, and it includes free cancellation, but also free wireless internet. They have a Price Match Guarantee so you can book with confidence, and there is no minimum stay required to qualify. Check the hotel’s page on hotels.com for availability on your own dates.
Butler service is just the beginning
While these Overwater Lagoon Suites are not exactly like those in Bora Bora or the Maldives, they are indeed over a gorgeous lagoon. This is a serious 5-star resort that offers every luxury amenity you could dream of, perhaps the most notable being the 24-hour butler service. The butlers don’t follow you around your suite, of course, but they are ready to do anything you ask, whether it’s draw a bath, prepare for a room service meal, or book a custom tour to the nearby ruins.
Each of the overwater suites are 977 square feet, including a private terrace, so they are the size of apartments rather than hotel rooms. There’s a heated plunge pool on each terrace, and a luxurious bathroom complete with outdoor garden shower. You also get free wi-fi service and a Bose sound system.
Playa del Carmen is fast and easy to reach
Another of the many benefits of this resort compared to those in Bora Bora is that it’s located only about an hour from Cancun International Airport. With affordable flights on a wide variety of airlines, even from Europe, it means that getting to the resort takes far less time and much less expense than flying to Los Angeles then to Tahiti then to Bora Bora.
In the coming months you’ll be able to fly nonstop from almost anywhere in the US or Canada to Cancun for a few hundred dollars, probably nonstop. Compare this to close to US$2,000 per person and 12 or more hours to Bora Bora, and you’ll see that this is a practical alternative just as it’s one of the best resorts in all of Mexico.
